Day: 3
Date: Sunday, January 4
Location: Victorville - Ridgecrest, CA
Distance: 82-miles
Route: US 395 north
Climate: Sunny, breezy, mid-40's.
Finally the first day with everyone on a bike except Norm in the morning. I gave up my bike so Kyle could get some miles on his
legs. After a great breakfast at Rob's grandparents, they waved us off to a long day. We should have started earlier, but it was
super cold and windy early in the morning. Nick started having hamstring problems within 7-miles. Both JR and Derek started
to fade within 15-miles and couldn't keep up with the torrid pace of Steve/Rob. They were both suffering jetlag and sleep
deprivation. Kyle struggled some because Norm's bike was not a good fit. All three rookie riders spent some time in the
support van. We had a Subway lunch at Kramer Junction and were falling behind in daylight. Reaching our destination before
sundown was unlikely and the van could only haul a limited number of riders and bikes. So Norm got on his bike to cover some
distance. The topo was a gradual uphill all the way climbing nearly 3000-ft. Rob and Steve made it to Ridgecrest before dark,
but Norm and Kyle had to be rescued at a gas station after dark. It gets so cold out in the desert after sundown. We stayed
overnight in the Best Western with hot tub and breakfast. We ate a sushi supper at the Tokyo House The guys stayed in an
apartment suite. Tomorrow will be an even more challenging day in Death Valley.
